F1 cargo in the seventies

Imagem da semana: Todo ano a mesma coisa: Chega o equipamento das equipes de Formula 1 no aeroporto Viracopos em Campinas e segue para Sampa. Tudo relatado detalhadamente pela mídia que parece até contar a quantia de caminhões no comboio. Olha só como era o transporte dos bólidos daF1 três décadas atrás. Gostaria de ver/ler uma matéria sobre isto. Aliás, alguém se qualifica para revelar o ano desta insensatez documentada acima? Ah, e antes que alguém questione o visual do cabeçote do blog esta semana: Vai fazer um ano que o Schumi se aposentou. Uma ultima chance de fazer uma homenagem por motivo justo por aqui. E ele merece. Não acham?

Event – 15/10/1983:
In finale equally tight as the 2007 F1 World Championship, Nelson Piquet secured his second World title in Kyalami against the Renault of Prost and Arnoux by coming home second to his team-mate Ricardo Patrese.

Adolf Brudes von Breslau 15/10/1899, 108 years ago, Adolf Brudes von Breslau born in Kotulin, Germany (today Poland).

Brudes started racing motorcycles before turning to four wheels. He finished third in the Mille Miglia in 1940. After the cessation of hostilities he resumed his racing activities, driving a BMW Orley Special. It was in this car that he made his one and only World Championship appearance in the 1952 German Grand Prix. He qualified in 19th place but went out after just 5 laps with engine problems. and appearance in the 1952 German GP. He then became a Borgward works driver competing in long-distance races such as the Buenos Aires 1000 Km, Le Mans 24 Hours and Carrera Panamericana as well as attempting speed records.

Born 108 years ago, died 21 years ago ( 5 / 11 /1986), aged 87.

Al Pease 15/10/1921, 86 years ago, Al Pease is born.

Al Pease he has the distinction of being the only F1 driver to be black flagged for being too slow. At the 1969 Canadian GP at Mosport Pease was disqualfied for dangerously not allowing drivers to lap him, despite being many laps down. He was so slow that he was over 12 laps down when he was black flagged midway through the race. He also finished 45 laps down at the 1967 Canadian GP in the rain after he had to replace his battery when he stalled at the far end of the circuit. He had to run back to the pits to get a new battery and return to replace it himself, in the pouring rain. A sometime racer in Formula A, Pease handled a Lola T140-Chevrolet and a Brabham BT23B-Climax 4 with modest success during 1969 and 1970.

Philip Fotheringham-Parker 1958 22/9/1907, 100 years ago, Philip Fotheringham-Parker is born in Beckenham.

Fotheringham-Parker was a wealthy amateur driver who participated in the 1951 British Grand Prix driving a privately-run Maserati 4CL. He once survived going over the top of the banking at Brooklands in an Alvis Silver Eagle.

Born 100 years ago, died 26 years ago (15/10/1981) , aged 74.

Craig Breedlove, Spirit of America

EVENT – 15/10/1964:
Craig Breedlove became the first man to travel at over 500mph on land with the “Spirit Of America”. He clocked 526.277 mph beating his own record of two days earlier by almost 60mph.

EVENT – 15/10/1997:
Andy Green became the first person to break the sound barrier on land when he traveled at 763.04 mph (1220.86 kph) in Thrust SSC.

Emile Delahaye was a French automotive pioneer and racer who founded Delahaye Automobiles.

Tony Rolt 16/10/1918, 89 years ago, Anthony Peter Roylance Rolt is born in Bordon, Hampshire, UK.

Tony Rolt is a former Formula One driver from England. He participated in 2 grands prix, debuting on July 18, 1953.
Rolt became then involved wsith the Ferguson P99 project, which later became the only 4WD car to win a Formula 1 race when Stirling Moss drove it to victory in the Gold Cup at Oulton Park. The 4WD concept also proved successful in America and in 1966 was used in the Jensen FF road car. The company was a huge success and Rolt retired a wealthy man.

Peter Ashdown 16/10/1934, 73 years ago, Peter Ashdown is born in Danbury, UK.

A leading light in the British Formula Junior scene, Peter had a real talent in small capacity sports cars. His made one GP appearance in Alan Brown’s Formula 2 Cooper-Climax at the 1959 British Grand Prix at Aintree. Though he never again had a chance to race in a Grand Prix, he raced on in Formula Junior Lola and sports cars, winning his class in the 1960 and 1962 Nurburgring 1000km. He retired in 1962.

Walter Bäumer 17/10/1908, 99 years ago, Walter Bäumer is born in Bünde, Germany.

Won the Mille Miglia in 1940 with Hsuschke von Hanstein, Testing a Mercedes-Benz W125 during practice for the German GP 1937 was as close as he came to a Grand Prix. During this period, there was little activity for him so that his true potential was never revealed. He died when his car door opened in a corner as he was being kissed by a girl. He fell out into a field, receiving a fatal wound in his neck from a sharp wooden object.

Roberto Lippi 17/10/1924, 83 years ago, Roberto Lippi is born.

Good sports car driver who raced an OSCA-engined de Tomaso in the Italian Grand Prix in 1961 and 1962.

Enzo Coloni 17/10/1946, 61 years ago, Enzo Coloni is born.

Raced in Italian F3 winning the Championship in 1982 at the age of 36 before switching to team management and to manufacturing. Entered F1 in 1987 and struggled on until 1992.

Kimi Räikkönen 17/10/1979, 28 years ago, Kimi Matias Räikkönen is born in Espoo, Finland

He finished runner-up in the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship in 2003 and 2005. Just days after his birthday he just might wrap up one nice little presesnt as he is one of three contenders for the 2007 title.

Luki Botha 17/10/2006, Lukas Johannes Botha dies.

Luki Botha was born in born in Tswane (formerly Pretoria), Gauteng, South Africa. He made his single-seater debut in 1966 at the end of season Rhodesian Grand Prix, finishing second in his Brabham BT11 behind Bob Anderson’s similar car. Less than three weeks later in January 1967 he made his one and only Grand Prix appearance at the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. Driving his privately entered Brabham BT11-Climax, the engine died at the start and he was already a lap down before he could get it going. He ended up in 8th place in a race of attrition but unfortunately was unclassified as he was 20 laps down on the winning Cooper T81 Maserati of Pedro Rodriquez.

Died 1 year ago ( 17 / 10 /2006), aged 76.

Ludovico Scarfiotti 18/10/1933, 77 years ago, Ludovico Scarfiotti is born.

The nephew of Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli, Scarfiotti captured the hearts of his countrymen with an enormously popular victory in the 1966 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. When his team-mate Mike Parkes was badly injured at Spa-Francorchamps, Scarfiotti, already depressed by Bandini’s death at Monaco a month earlier, virtually retired. However his love of racing brought him back in 1968 with Cooper-BRM in F1 and Porsche in the European Mountain Championship. It was at the wheel of a 910 Bergspyder that he tragically lost his life in practice for the second round at Berchtesgarten Rossfeld in Germany.

Racing driver who made one attempt at F1. He won his class at Le Mans in 1959, finishing 7th overall.

John Cannon 18/10/1999, John Cannon dies.

Though John Cannon was born in London, England he was a Canadian who put in the drive of his career on the 13th of October at the Laguna Seca round of the 1968 CanAm series. From 15th on he not only won the rain-race and put in the fastest lap but lapped the whole field which included Denny Hulme (2nd) and Bruce McLaren (5th). After winning the 1970 SCCA Formula A title in a McLaren M10B, Cannon got a chance to drive a BRM P153 in the 1971 US Grand Prix and a March 701 in the Questor GP in Ontario, Canada. However, he continued racing in F5000 with occasional drives in USAC and Can-Am, finishing second in the 1976 Rothmans F5000 series. Cannon was killed in an aircraft accident when an air supply fault led to a fatal crash-landing in a cornfield in New Mexico.

Born 74 years ago, died 8 years ago ( 18 / 10 /1999), aged 66.

Nello Pagani 18/10/2003, Nello Pagani dies.

Just a week after his 92nd birthday the Italian aristocrat and former motorcycle and race car driver passed away. Driving a Maserati 4CLT/48 to seventh in the Swiss GP at Bremgarten in 1950 was his greatest successon four wheels.

Born 96 years ago, died 4 years ago ( 18 / 10 /2003), aged 92.

Enrique Bernoldi 2007 19/10/1978, 29 years ago, Enrique Antônio Langue de Silvério e Bernoldi is born in Curitiba, Brazil.

Enrique Bernoldi is a former Formula One driver who raced for the Arrows team and in recent years has been a test driver for the BAR-Honda-Team. Recently made his debut in Brazil’s Stock Car V8 series.

Heikki Kovalainen 19/10/1981, 26 years ago, Heikki Kovalainen is born in Suomussalmi, Finland.

Heikki Kovalainen, the 2004 champion of the World Series by Nissan, has had a great debut as driver for the Renault F1 team in 2007 after two years as third driver. The Finn had already caught the racing World’s attention when he beat the likes Of Michael Schumacher and Sebastién Loeb in the 2004 Race of Champions at the Stade de France in Paris.

Loius Zborowski 19/10/1924, Count Louis Zborowski dies.

The wealthy son of a Polish Count and an American mother, Louis Zborowski raced for Aston Martin at Brooklands and in the 1923 French Grand Prix. He drove a BUgatti in the 1923 Indianapolis 500 and drove an American Miller 122 in the 1923 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. He joined the Mercedes team in 1924 but died in one of their cars, after hitting a tree during the Italian Grand Prix.

Born 112 years ago, died 83 years ago ( 19 / 10 /1924), aged 29.

Hermann Lang, 1930 19/10/1987, Hermann Lang dies.

Hermann Lang was one of the great drivers of the 1930s who, robbed of his best years by the war, emerged as a Grand Prix driver in the 1950s.

Born 98 years ago, died 20 years ago ( 19 / 10 /1987), aged 78.

Gunnar Nilsson, 1977 20/10/1978, Gunnar Nilsson dies.

Gunnar Nilsson was a fine driver who was rising to prominence until cancer killed him. He is remembered thanks to the charity that bears his name.

Born 59 years ago, died 29 years ago ( 20 / 10 /1978), aged 30.

Alfredo Pian 21/10/1912, 95 years ago, Alfredo Pian is born in La Rosa, Argentina.

Pian entered the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix with a Maserati 4CLT-50 run by Scuderia Achille Varzi. During the Saturday practice sessions, Pián, who had already qualified in 18th place, spun on oil and crashed into the guard-rail and was thrown out of the car. He sustained a broken fibula and not only didn’t started the race, but never tried to race in F1 again.

Born 95 years ago, died 17 years ago ( 25 / 7 /1990), aged 78.

Cesare Perdisa, 1957 21/10/1932, 75 years ago, Cesare Perdisa is born.

Cesare made his mark driving a Maserati T200S sports car in 1954. He went on to drive for the Maserati and Ferrari works teams.

Born 75 years ago, died 9 years ago ( 10 / 5 /1998), aged 66.

Nasif Estefano 21/10/1973, Nasif Moises Estefano dies.

Estefano started racing in the Turismo Carratera. He failed to qualify for the 1962 Italian Grand Prix in a deTomaso. Returned to Argentina and won the 1965 and 1966 Argentine F3 Shampionship. Went back to Turismo Carratera endurance events but was killed in the Gran Prémio de la Reconstrucción Nacional.

Born 75 years ago, died 34 years ago ( 21 / 10 /1973), aged 41.
