We are counting down the days to the season-opening Daytona 500 and for the amount of days left to the 2011 Sprint Cup’s opening race we’ll reveal a magic number in NASCAR stats and what it means. 12 days left, so today’s number is: 12

12 Second-places finishes for James Hylton before his first Cup win, a series record. Hylton, the 1966 NASCAR Grand National (now Sprint Cup) Rookie of the Year, won twice in 601 starts from 1964 to 1993. His first win came in 1970 (pictured above) at Richmond in his 187th start. He turned 76 last August, is still racing and still hopes to qualify for a Daytona 500. Driving a Richard Childress-owned Chevrolet, Hylton almost qualified 3 years ago.
