Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon has been seriously injured after a multi car wreck sent his and championship contender Will Power’s cars sailing through the air at more than 200 mph in Las Vegas’ title deciding Indy 300 race.
While Power’s car (foto) landed mid-track and the Australian was able to climb out of his wrecked penske Dallara by himself, Wheldon’s car apparently hit the catch fence exiting Turn 2 and was severly damaged. There are reports that the roll hoop was ripped off upon impact.
Wheldon was transported to a hospital in a helicopter, his condition is reported to be serious but no other information has come forth so far. Pippa Mann and J.R. Hildebrand were also transported to hospital after complaining of dizziness, Will Power was also taken to hospital after complaining about back pain.
For points-leader Dario Franchitti this means, he has conquered his third straight title and fourth overall after Power went out. Hard to imagine anyone is in the mood to celebrate today…
