Just learned that Mike Hewland, designer of the hugely popular Hewland racing transmissions, passed away last a couple of weeks ago at the age of 89. Part of the merit for my 1981 championship win was the reliability of the Hewland gearbox. I even won a race at the Nürburgring with – as we found out later – a cracked gearbox casing after a practice crash. Still it worked reliably till the flag. So thank you, Mike, for making successful racing affordable to me and so many of us racers over generations. R.I.P.
